A rather nice name-check

The Books Interview on The new Statesman, with Maggie Gee

Which contemporary writers do you read?

I read non-stop, and there are so many crowding each other out. Of writers between 25 and fortyish, I read and admire Adam Marek, Nii Parkes, Diana Evans, Marian Garvey, Salena Godden, Vanessa Gebbie.

The whole interview can be read HERE

Maggie's memoir, My Animal Life is published today.

Why Vanessa, we are the same age-ish!

Lovely special mention!

Hi Rachel, it is nice. I make a point of namechecking writers I admire, especially those who are yet to 'break through' - and it is nice to have it back.

Well done on getting a mention, V.

However, when I read "contemporary" I assumed the interviewer meant those writers getting their work out there in the 2010's, so it was a bit frightening for oldies like me to see that those over 40ish don't feature in M.G.'s list....just because we're practically O.A.P.'s, it doesn't mean we've got nothing worthwhile to say!

You know what its like with interviews, you give the answer that comes - I'm sure she reads loads and loads of writers and can't list em all - I can imagine that age of writer is hardly uppermost in her decision makers.

But of course - no surprises there: the lady Gee is clearly one of taste and discrimination ...
Congrats, tho'! And thanks for the link to the i/v; interesting reading I'd have missed otherwise. M x
