Royalties

You DO get them! My book has been out twelve months, and I thought I'd ask as I hadn't heard anything... so I did. And yes, there are royalties. So as soon as I get the cheque, I am winging it all off to Cancer Research.

But just so's you know - if books are sold through Amazon you get precious little because of the discounts they demand. And if books are discounted through the publisher, you only get a percentage of the actual sales figures...not the list price. I didn't know that.
So I had been trying to calculate what I would be giving to the charity, in memory of jan, the friend who was a huge supporter and who died from breast cancer just before the book appeared.... and getting it a bit wrong, sadly.

However, I am glad to report that a good few hundred quid will be winging its way to them...as soon as...

nah. I'd much rather go to Paris for the day first class on Eurostar and have a slap up meal on the Champs Elysees. But then knowing me the train would get stuck in the tunnel and I'd be sick on the way back. Might as well do the decent thing!

That's a lovely thing to do with the royalties Vanessa. I wish you plenty of them.

I'll look for outlets other than Amazon - sorry, I had no idea! Thank you for donating your royalties.

Yes, the reality of book royalties the first time through is a bit of a shock. My first royalty cheque just about covered a bag of groceries. Got one the other day that might feed us for a month- so things are looking up.

Good on you, V, for your big heart!

ooo eck. An embarassed thank you for all the lovely comments. I didn't post for that (lovely though they are) but cos most of my friends knew that I was donating all royalties to cancer research in memory of Jan (to whom the book is dedicated). And as no mention had been made yet, they must have been thinking I was planning to slope off to Bognor for a dirty weekend on the proceeds.

Well done you! And your royalties are amazing - the most I've got for any of mine at any one time in the last nine years is £39.52. I spend it wisely and well, you'll be glad to hear!

Not that amazing, I'm sure! But it is nice to know I sold a few copies.

Nemmind Royalties.... I got three separate cheques recently for stuff published in American lit mags... one for $25, one for $20 and one for $15... won't break the bank, I thought, but might be a nice book or two bought out of it...

My bank charged me £7.50 per cheque for handling charges... meant I'll be lucky to get one book out of what I got!! Wish I had just told the mags to give it all to charity - as I had been doing until recently. Better doing good than going into the bank coffers... economic recovery aside.

Douglas- I live in Botswana so almost all of my magazine money comes from overseas. I totally relate with the bank charge problem. Botswana banks seem to think banks were set up to earn their money through charges.

What I have done now -if overseas money is less than 100USD I tell them to buy me Amazon gift certificates. More than 100 USD you need to do a SWIFT transfer if they'll agree. It has reduced the pounds of flesh my bank has skimmed off me lately.

Excellent to know that the concept of royalties is alive and well (especially since we share a publisher), thanks V. Annoying about Amazon - they have such a stranglehold on the market. I wish I didn't keep obsessively checking my rankings.

And Douglas - try PayPal, the charges must be less than that. That's how I usually ask to be paid, and I offer to pay any charges if there are any.

Very well done. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

Tania, you're right PayPal would be good, in theory but we don't have it in Botswana so I forgot to mention it. My one comment would be- don't mention the paying of anything unless they do. I know even SHIFT transfers cost them but I keep silent unless they bring it up. Already in most case we're getting paid peanuts.
