Quiet congratulations to Petina Gappah whose marvellous collection, Elegy for Easterly, has now made the Guardian First Book Award shortlist. Quiet, because I really want this book to win.

And it is quietly lovely to note that one of the judges is a contributor to Short Circuit... Tobias Hill.

Sounds like an interesting list, for sure. But confess to being mildy repelled by the notion of someone having 'an early mid-life crisis'. Sounds just a tad too 'bad-hair-day shockhorror' from my horribly cynical, thoroughly battered perspective. But that's my POV, and I should simply read the darn novel!
It is a lovely book, whatever inspired it!
